Platelet Rich Plasma for Hair Loss

PRP for Hair Loss

Platelet-Rich Plasma (PRP) is obtained by drawing your own blood and refining it to separate the plasma from other components. HOW MUCH DOES A HAIR TRANSPLANT COST IN TORONTO?

Our hair transplant clinic, based out of Toronto, is an affordable, professional, and renowned establishment for treating male and female androgenetic alopecia. We are a fully accredited cosmetic surgery facility certified by the Canadian Ambulatory Centre Accreditation Committee.

While it isn’t possible for us to provide a price chart for potential patients, we charge our patients based on the number of grafts necessary to complete each session. To get a more specific quote, we encourage all potential patients to please contact our facility regarding your interest in a hair transplant procedure. After a brief consultation, we’ll be able to provide you with a more specific estimate of cost.

As a rough estimate and an example, a full procedure to the front of the scalp could cost around $4,000 or more (again, depending on the number of grafts necessary to complete the session). A full procedure that includes the crown of the head (back half of the balding area), as well as the front, could cost roughly $6,000 to $9,000, plus tax.

PLEASE NOTE: All costs are in Canadian Dollars.

HOW INVOLVED IS DR. HONG IN THE PROCEDURE?

Dr.Colin Hong feels it is crucial to the success of the transplant that he is involve in all the stages of the procedure. He see all patients to understands their expectation, the current condition of his or her hair, their medical history and current medication. The type and stages of transplantation will be discussed in details with the clients. Dr. Colin Hong removes the donor strip, suture the area, plan and supervise make all the recipient sites and assist in planting the grafts. In this way, I am intimately involved in overseeing all aspects of the surgery. Dr. Hong would also like to emphasize that he will only perform 1 operation at a time, and do NOT have other hair transplantation surgeries running at the same time. Dr. Hong see all my patients the following day when they return to have their hair washed, as well as seeing patients at 1 week when sutures are removed.

HOW DO I SELECT THE BEST PHYSICIAN?

My first pearl is take your time. Do not be in any hurry. When you see a physician for the first time bring prepared questions with you, ask lots of questions and see lots of photos. Be sure that the photographs that you are looking at are the ones of the physician you are speaking to, and that they are not retouched. How long has the physician been performing hair transplants?, is the physician a specialist or general practitioner (you can verify the training with the college of physician and surgeon website – college of physician and surgeon website) does he do any other type of surgery?, what percentage of his practice is hair transplants? Is the operating room certified by the College of Physicians and surgeons of Ontario out of hospital facilities OHF program Does he advertise? Spending a lot of money on expensive advertising does not always mean that that physician is any better, or worse, than a physician who relies on referrals from other physicians or word of mouth from happy patients. Make sure the physician answers all your questions appropriately. Ask to see the offices and O.R.’s. Ask to see patients’ of the physician. Make sure that the person you are speaking to is the person who will be performing the surgery, and is not a consultant. Does the physician offer different types of grafts and techniques? Some physicians like to perform only one type of graft or use only one type of technique. Because patients expectations, goals, hair characteristics, amounts of hair loss and future hair loss can differ, what may be best for one patient not be best for another. I offer different grafting techniques, different grafting sizes and approaches depending on what is discussed at consultation.

WHAT IS THE RISK FACTORS FOR MY HAIR TRANSPLANTATION?

Before any hair restoration surgery can be scheduled, your physician hair restoration specialist may ask you certain questions about your lifestyle, health and any medications you might take. This is so they can try to determine your risk for any complications that may occur after surgery. Although hair transplantation is not a risky surgery in itself, complications such as infection, excessive bleeding and delayed healing can still occur. Certain factors can increase your risk for these complications, and they include:

  • Tobacco use
  • Heavy alcohol use
  • Obesity
  • Malnutrition (including bulimia and anorexia)
  • Immunosuppressive drugs
  • Herbal supplements
  • Immunosuppressive disease (ie. HIV, AIDS)
  • Diabetes or other chronic metabolic disease
  • Chronic disease of the heart, liver, kidneys, lungs, or gastrointestinal system
  • Chronic or recurrent skin infections
  • Chronic or recurrent bacterial or viral infections
  • Medications that decrease the ability of the blood to clot
  • Conditions that require antibiotics prophylaxis

In many cases, the long term use of these factors would increase your risk for complications more so than occasional use. Therefore, it is important that you inform your physician hair restoration specialist of any of these risk factors, even if they may be embarrassing to discuss for you. It is unlikely that you would be denied hair transplantation due to these risk factors. Rather, your doctor would be made aware of any possible complications and may be able to take precautionary steps to further decrease their risk. You might also be asked to try and avoid some of these risks for a few weeks before and after your surgery, if possible. Remember, the postoperative complications could impact your final results, and both you and your physician would want the best outcome possible.
